"Dog Without Feathers", coreografia Deborah Colker "Dog Without Feathers", coreografia Deborah Colker

The show presented at the Queen Elisabeth Hall of the South Bank Center on 9 May 2019 by the Brazilian choreographer Deborah Colker, with the homonymous company she founded in 1994, is inspired by Dog Without Feathers, a 1950 poem by João Cabral de Melo Neto, that connects the image of the slow river Capibaribe River with the people who live there. Colker and her company visited that river in the northeast of Brazil and created a sound-saturated dance that wants to immerse themselves in the landscapes, animals, plants and the population they found there. Seventy minutes of movement, music and film to explore the mythology and influence of the Rio Capibaribe of north-eastern Brazil, staging first of all the mud, then the mangroves, the beauty and vulnerability of the river and those who live along its banks, in an increasingly despised environment.
At the bottom of the scene is the projection of the black and white footage of Cláudio Assis, a poem in which images and metaphors flow into a dreamlike state. it is the main theme of the choreography, whose dancers are extraordinarily seductive for their elastic grace. It is a background of strong images: a boat dragged on the bed of a dry river, a field of dried crops in flames, dense forests, a slum, environments in which the figures of the dancers themselves are already integrated during the filming, the skin and mud-caked hair. On stage, the dancers prolong the projected environment and animate it even more with their tragic mimicry, so much so that it seems to have sprung from the earth itself.
In the figures mimed with surprising elegance the fourteen mud-covered dancers merge with the ground, then hover like birds that evolve in the sky and rest on a branch, intertwine with each other as if to form insects with many legs, which now struggle, now they mate, then group together curved and thick as mangrove roots: we are told in the notes of the program that they are the so-called "crabs", which must survive in a ruthless environment. In all this succession of images the human figure is an element emerging from the animal world, of which it is an integral part and at the same time its destructive element is the spectacular film by the Brazilian director Cláudio Assis to create an extraordinary vision of Brazil. The syncretism between projection and dance fuses classical, contemporary and ritual dance with the poetry of images, extremely accurate in form and does not allow one to simply abandon oneself to enjoy the vision of this creation. Attending to this production the thought can only go to deforestation, the consequent drought and the effects on the animal world.
However, this lively and dynamic work seems to be the projection of an album of photos taken by someone else during an incredibly intense and engaging journey but of which it cannot make you participate. For the first part of the evening, the soundtrack includes pieces that set to music words taken from poems by Melo Neto, in English and Portuguese, followed by sound settings derived from complex rhythms and sounds with progressive reminiscences. The show is incredible, but it doesn't include you, even if every gesture is executed with great precision and delicacy in the dazzling dominance of the mud. But no doubt, no guest of the evening will soon forget the Companhia de Dança Deborah Colker.
